Alma Gipson’s Biography

My husband and I live on our farm near Bigelow in Perry County.

I began painting many years ago for my entertainment and that of my family.  In 1966 I took art classes under the direction of Townsend Wolfe, former director of the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock.  I also attended art workshops with instructors Tom Schmerler, Rebecca Oswalt, Ginger Potter, John Birdsong, Gerald Beinvenieu, Bill Garrison, Bruce Piel, and Dave Cook.

I work primarily in oil but use acrylic, watercolor, and prisma color as well.  My work includes landscape, figurative, wildlife, floral, and still life subjects.  My favorite subject is old buildings, especially those that are in danger of being torn down or giving way to the elements.  This is my way of preserving a bit of history.

In the past several years I have completed six large murals of the life of St. Francis of Assisi, four murals of the early life of Christ, and several murals for baptistries of local churches.

My work has been published in local bank calendars, the Ozark edition of the Arkansas Democrat Gazette, and our local Petit Jean Headlight newspaper.  My awards include several 1st and 2nd awards in the Conway League of Artists Tri County shows, four best of show awards and several 1st and 2nd awards at the Perry County Fair, and several 1st place awards at the Arkansas State Fair.  I was twice the featured artist for the Doctors Hospital art show.

I am currently president of the Perry County Arts League, a member of Hidden Gallery, member and at-large member of the Conway League of Artists, and a member of the Artists Workshop Gallery.
